A proxy is a server (an application or a computer system) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers.

What information transmits to a web-server (by a browser or proxy server):
- a name and a version of an operating system
- a name and a version of a browser
- configuration of a browser (display resolution, color depth, java / javascript support, etc.)
- IP-address of a client (most important)

The environment variables,
REMOTE_ADDR – IP address of a client
HTTP_VIA – Value is an address (or several addresses) of a proxy server, this variable is added by a proxy server itself if you use one.
HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR – Value is a real IP address of a client (your IP), this variable is also added by a proxy server if you use one.
HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE – what language is used in browser
HTTP_USER_AGENT – “a user’s agent” that about yout browsers(name and version) and an operating system information.

Level 2 — Anonymous Proxies

This type of proxies hides your real IP address but the server may know that you’re connecting over a proxy because the proxy sends additional headers such as HTTP_VIA or HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR. In some cases, these headers may contain your real IP address and if that’s the case, then that proxy gets marked as transparent. If one of those proxy headers contain any other IP address that’s not yours, then the proxy will still be considered to be anonymous.
